Avoid the Crowds
The crowds in Yellowstone tend to stay on more accessible, shorter hikes that go to the more popular locations. Choosing to go on a more strenuous hike that leaves pavement far behind is perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle.
Average Hike Length
The Yellowstone Ecosystem has over 900 miles of trails that you can hike. This is our best way to get into to the backcountry, then back out the same day. Our other hikes range between 3 and 12 miles. We can go further here….Come well fed, hydrated, and ready.
What to Pack for Any Hike.
Your guide will bring the snacks and binoculars Harder Yellowstone hikes require careful packing more than any other guided hike through the park. Your guide will come prepared with:
- Bear Spray—we’ll bring two!
- Snacks
- Food
- Bev
- Binoculars
- Extra water in vehicle
- Spotting scopes—If there’s an opportunity to use them near vehicle
- First aid kit
- Maps
We always recommend that tour attendees bring the following items for every hike, even half-day hikes:
- Bear Spray—Always Over Prepare When Bears Are Involved
- Bug Spray—Not often needed but sometimes great to have
- Water—At least 2 liters. A backpack with a water bladder is strongly recommended. Drinking 3 to 5 liters of water on a hike is not uncommon when it's hot or you are underhydrated. Your water storage bag or bottle must be able to hold at least 2 liters for day hike...more for longer hikes
- Anti-Chafing Cream
- Day pack--Holds our food and water! A Camel Back, Hydro Pack, or something similar is recommended
- A Rain Jacket or Poncho—Weather can turn wet fast
- Clothing--Light wool layers work best so you can adjust as temperature and cloud conditions change. Don’t forget your stocking cap!
- Light gloves—Even in July/August you can be surprised by cold/wet weather
- Sunglasses and Brimmed hat—Look Cool While Protecting Your Eyes
- Sunscreen—Yes, Even on Cloudy Days
- Sturdy Hiking boots or Trail Running Shoes with Armored Soles—Our Cacti are real pieces of work!
- Trekking Poles--Optional. It makes walking easier, up to you
- Wool Socks—Wool Socks Won’t Tear Up Your Feet. Careful not to go to thick on your socks!
